text-align: -webkit-auto;">I just returned from a photo workshop with Paul James in Tuscany, Italy. We were in the Chiante area of Tuscany, which you wine aficionados will recognize as a famous Tuscan wine. We stayed at a farm house of the Castello di Verrazzano winery. Don't worry, although I did lift a glass for a group picture, I didn't partake. I know you believe me.

Each time I have been on a workshop with Paul, we have made multiple stops at the same location. When you travel across the ocean to get to your location, this can seem like a waste of time. But it is not. As photographers, we can control composition and the best use of photographic technology, but controlling the skies is a wee bit harder. Sometimes you have to wait for God's handiwork. After three trips to this location, we we blessed with this wonderful scene.

(click picture for larger image)

I have been told by more than one instructor that one of my problems is that I need to slow down a bit. They are right. Being methodical insures that you get things right the first time. Rather than just popping shots of left and right, a bit of forethought and planning can deliver a better result. This next image, however, isn't one of those. Images can be fleeting. As the sun moves across the image, sometimes you have only a second or two to capture the image. The light on the vineyard in this next shot caught my eye. By the time I was set up, I got one image and the vineyard was in the shadows.

(click picture for larger image)

Photographers love to shoot during the golden hours. These are the hours just around sunrise and sunset. It would seem this would make for a short day. Wake up early, shoot for an hour, back to bed till noon, lounge around till sunset, shoot for another hour, eat, drink, and be merry, and wake up and do it all again. Of course that's not what happens (except for the eat, drink, and be merry). Between the golden hours, it's scouting time (or for the less-dedicated, shopping time). Each day, Paul and I spent a good amount of time scouting new locations. We found these next two shots on one of our scouting trips. I wish I could remember where in was! I'm sure Paul will remember.

This is an example of one of the locations we scouted. One of my tasks was a challenge to keep Paul's eyes on the road as we drove around scouting locations. In Italy, the roads are narrow, and the drivers are fast. This blog entry provides evidence of my success in this assignment. As we found each location, we would mark it on the GPS for future visits. Our GPS guided us to this location on more than one occasion. It is a winery is just outside the hill village of Radda.

(click picture for larger image)

This location is one we referred to as the vineyard's. I know, you don't see any vineyards in this shot. This is an example of something I have written about before on this blog. Sometimes you need to turn around. We had been trying to shoot a beautiful vineyard to the west of this image. The western skies just were not cooperating. As Paul and I were trying to figure out the west facing image, Sheryl, one of the other photographers, said "a . . . guys . . ., you might want to turn around!".

(click picture for larger image)

While at the Castello di Verrazzano, we were given the privileged of photographing the the cellars of the winery. It was a fabulous opportunity that provided many interesting shots. This shot is actually not in the cellars, but rather an attic where they dry these grapes for a "dessert" wine. Again, I didn't partake, but heard it was nice.

(click picture for larger image)

Every time I leave to shoot in Europe, I wonder why I am traveling across the ocean to shoot when we have such great scenic shots right here in Utah. I know as I am in the air over the Atlantic I am passing a dozen Germans coming to Utah to shoot at Zions or Bryce. This shot, in a way, represents that same issue. We put many miles on the van scouting for locations, and many hours traveling to those locations early in the morning to capture the best light. This shot represents perhaps the best skies of the trip. It was just outside the door of the farm house, literally less than 100 steps from my bedroom. Sometimes we go to a lot of trouble searching of beauty when it lies right in front of us.

I finally made it to Tuscany and I loved it. This has been a dream of mine for a while. Thanks Kimi for letting me go. I wish you could have gone with me. That would have been the only thing that would have made it better.

Last year I shot in Provonce an the Luberon of France. They refer to it as the Tuscany of France. I'm glad I was able to go to the Tuscany of Tuscany. I hope to go back. I imagine I will. Paul does this workshop every October. Want to come along?

The Archer

I did something I never do. I took pictures of people. One person in particular. The Archer. My Father-In-Law. And he is quite an archer. He has been practicing archery for many years. In Japanese they say "seisha seichū" meaning correct shooting is correct hitting. In Japan, the Archer practices every aspect of shooting from how to approach the shooting position to the release of the arrow.

The range is about 75 feet to a target about 12 inches in diameter. The bullseye would only be about three inches in diameter. And our archer has hit his fair share of them. Somewhere on the image below is his name for winning one of the competitions.

One think you find in Cinque Terre is color. The pallet is so beautiful, you'd think it was coordinated. Maybe the art council gets together and assigns colors or hands out paint. I don't know, but it looks wonderful. Don't know if it is true, but I have heard that the renowned architect Michael Graves picks his pallets from Cinque Terre.

This shot almost put me on my butt! And, I would have ended up right in the drink with all my gear. See the black stuff at the bottom of the shot? Very, very slippery. After I about lost it, I heard a whistle from behind. I turned to see a fisherman taking out his small boat. He smiled and pointed at his eyes as if to say "watch out, I don't want to be fishin' you out". I waved back as if to say "sorry, I'm just a stupid tourist." Love the shot though. Taken in Riomagiorre.
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; Cassis is a small port village that is popular amongst the locals of Marseille. Too many Parisians and Californians in Canne or St. Tropez. This next picture isn't great, but its a great tourist shot, and it was from our hotel balcony.

(click picture for larger image)

Mari and I had a great time exploring Cassis. I hope to go back to photograph it again. To be honest, I wasn't entirely happy with my shots when I got back, but enjoyed my stay anyway. We met a photographer at his gallery who had some wonderful shots of the area. They were

there for the taking, I just didn't get them. Maybe next time.

Inspite (or because) of it's simplicity, I did like this shot. The morning fog desaturated all color and gave this wonderful silhouette-like appearance to the landscape.

(click picture for larger image)

I will admit that I did get one. I really like this next shot. It was a "oh, cool, look at that" shot that I caught out of the corner of my eye. I snapped a few and was really happy with the water texture with the color of the buildings absorbed into the ripples.

(click picture for larger image)

I hope to go back. If for nothing else just to sit by the marina. Those who know me know I love sail boats. I don't have to sail them. Just watching them, sitting by them, brings me enjoyment. Maybe I can hook up with the photographer we met for a shoot or two. His name is Gregory Scicluna and he has a beautiful gallery right in the middle of Cassis. His work is spectacular, and I'm sure he can show me a location or two. (sorry, no website to link).

Roussillon

(click picture for a larger image)

Mari called me one Wednesday and said "Dad, you know my flight benefits with Delta end in January and I have fall break next week. Don't you think I should go to France?" She went on to justify her pending vacation "As a photography major, I think it's very important to go to France and take some pictures. What do you think? Do you want to come?"

Well, the last sentence got me. Followers of this blog would know that Kimi and I visited the South of France in March. I have to say I fell in love. What a beautiful place. Van Gogh, Picaso, Monet, even Nostradamus called this area home. I'll call it home anytime I have the chance. By Friday we were on our way.

Mari and I both agreed that although Gordes is very cool, the town of Roussillon is our favorite. Small and inviting, two very nice restaurants, and internet at the hotel until 9pm (go figure?). Roussillon is built on a mountain of ochre. In a way it looks a bit like Bryce Canyon. A very small Bryce Canyon. Above is Roussillon in the morning light.

(click picture for a larger image)

A quick drive to the other side of Roussillon for the above shot. Reminded me of a Hobbit village out of Tolkin's "The Hobbit" or "Lord of the Rings". I have to be honest. I did take the shot, that much is true, but only after putting my tripod right next to her's. I did ask though. She said "go right ahead", so I stole her shot. Good job Mari.

(click picture for a larger image)

I didn't steal this one from Mari, although she may have stole it from me. Only about 10 minutes away. I think this is the third or forth evening I have shot from this spot under cloudy skies. Can't seem to get away from the overcast. Maybe it's me. They kept telling us that the weather had been great the day before we got there. And, they said, it would be great in a couple of days, after we were to leave. You may have heard of the Wave. That's in North Coyote Buttes. But according to Shane, who has been to both places, South Coyote Buttes is even more interesting than the North. Both areas require a permit. Because of the notoriety of the Wave, there were 70 - 80 people in the lottery for 10 spots to the North. The South requires a permit as well, but we just asked, no lottery necessary. I think they only issued 8 permits the day we went.

(Click picture for a larger image)

This is the "Turtle". One wrong step and you ruin beautiful rock formations, hence the permit system. They give out 10 total permits per day at the Paria Contact Station. Since they don't give out all the permits, my bet is that less than 2,000 people visit this site per year.

(Click picture for a larger image)

One of the things we learned with Shane was to wait for the light. I found that I had probably been leaving too early. On more than one occasion, Shane would say "wait for it" and then the sky would explode. He also taught us some tricks for guessing when it might explode and when it was done for the night. I have been watching the sky frequently and found his instruction very helpful.

(Click picture for a larger image)

I really love this formation. We went to southern Utah and the Arizona strip. This area is almost all national parks and monuments. Stops in Bryce, Zions, Grand Staircase, Vermilion Cliffs, and Glen Canyon. The beauty of this area is spectacular. If you haven't seen it, you should.

Shane was a great instructor. I felt as if I progressed more in three days that in three years. Its funny, the things he was teaching are all things I have read. But being out in the field with him, having him review my shots real time, really helped my thought process. I went in hoping to come out with some great shots. I came out hoping to remember what I had learned so I could shoot better shots in the future. I also found that I came home, saw my shoots and knew what I had done wrong. Before I just knew what I liked and what I didn't. Now I felt like I knew why.

(Click picture for a larger image)

We spent our first evening shooting at a place called Toad Stool Hoodoos. The wind was ferocious. In fact it was basically ferocious all three days. But, we did get some interesting shots in the sand storm.

(Click picture for a larger image)

This last shot was my favorite location. The thing that bugged me about this location was how quick Shane went straight to it. We were all wandering around looking for something spectacular and he went to this. He impressed me with how quickly he found the most interesting items at a location. Of course he'd been there before.

(Click picture for a larger image)

Very cool with the sand blowing in the background. Landscape photographs always look so beautiful and peaceful. Look like places you want to go and meditate. But with 50 mile an hour winds and sand blowing in my face, I wasn't feeling the peace. Part of the sacrifice to get the shot, I guess.

After shooting for the evening, we went home and spent the evening cleaning the sand out of our gear. And out of our teeth.

More to come.

Paris

(Click picture for a larger image)

After Luberon, we made our way to Paris. I have to say that I loved it. Having lived for 6 months in Tokyo, I love the big city. You could spend a year in Paris and not run out of things to do. Of course this being our first visit, we did the obligatory. Eiffel Tower, Arch de Triumph, Orsay, Louvre, and Notre Dame.

Having spent the last few years doing landscape photography, shooting in the city was a unique experience. And, I have to admit, fun.

I said we went to the Louvre, but that isn't quit true. We did go to the Louvre, just not inside. Travel tip: read your travel book about the place you want to go before you get there. Then you won't be reading on Tuesday morning that the Louvre is closed on Tuesdays. But we did walk around the outside and got a few cool pictures.

(Click picture for a larger image)

As the Louvre was closed, we went to the Orsay. According to Rick Steves, travel books to the world, the Louvre is more important but the Orsay is more interesting. I certainly found it interesting. No pictures. Just two weeks before our arrival the Orsay began disallowing photography inside the museum.

Notre Dame was beautiful. Quite a wait to walk up and down the 360 stairs, but worth it. I won't bore you with my gargoyle pictures.

(Click picture for a larger image)

For many, Notre Dame is just a place to visit, just a tourist site. It is easy to forget that for many it is a pilgrimage, and a place of worship. And to some, it is just their local church. It has to be tough to worship with tourists walking around all the time.

(Click picture for a larger image)

Like so many monuments around the world, the Eiffel Tower is surrounded by people hawking their wares. Everything is "one dalla, one dalla". I successfully resisted. I guess this guy was on break.

(Click picture for a larger image)

A bit of advice for future travelers to Paris. As we walked around, we were constantly approached by people begging for money. I guess looking for more generous foreign tourists (read suckers) , they would always ask "do you speak english". After a while I started answering "No, I don't speak a word of it" in perfect english and they would just walk away. So there you go.

We spotted this guy watching the Eiffel Tower with his style on. In Paris, like so many other big cities, people-watching is a hobby in and of itself.

(Click picture for a larger image)

Some other things. The food was great! I'm sure you would expect that. The people were just as nice as back home. I'm sure you didn't expect that. And driving in the south of France was easy and fun. The drivers were more courteous than Utahns, but I'm not sure that's saying much. Thanks to Nancy the GPS voice for getting us to our destinations.

We had a great time. Got a few interesting photographs. I hope to go back. Maybe I take Mari and Kumi, my Artist-Photography and my Interior Designer. If you want to study art and design, France is it.

Luberon Valley

The Luberon Valley is a beautiful rural valley in the south of France. Kimi had a week off, and the flights to Nice looked wide open, so we decided to give it a try. The best way I can describe the villages of Luberon would be to refer you to the movie "Chocolat". Narrow alleyways, cobblestone roads, and quaint storefronts.

(Click picture for a larger image)

My favorite village was Gordes. This beautiful village is set on the side of a hill overlooking the Luberon. Very poor until the 1970's, this village was 'discovered' by wealthy Parisians looking for a country retreat. Apparently now Gordes real estate is out-of-reach for average Gordeians. It's a bit touristy, but still interesting.

(Click picture for a larger image)

Not far from Gordes is the village of Roussillon. Not as 'on the map' as Gordes, I found it more interesting. The cliffs near Roussillon look just like Bryce Canyon. Just like a very very small piece of Bryce Canyon. One thing that stands out in these villages is their use of color.

(Click picture for a larger image)

We spent hours walking around these small villages. It made me wonder what I would think tourists from afar invaded my small neighborhood with cameras in tow. But I'm sure they don't mind as tourism and farming are their major sources of income.

(Click picture for a larger image)

Far from the perfect stucco facades of our suburban retreats, these aged villages are full of character and charm. Like wine and men, age makes these abodes more interesting.

(Click picture for a larger image)

Zion NP in February

(Click picture for a larger image)

So I made another trip back to Zion NP. Thanks to my wonderful wife, who now works for Delta, I now fly for cheap. Real cheap. Actually, free. Can't beat that. But she does work very hard for the benefit, and I am grateful.

I wasn't really happy with the first trip this winter, and although I am a bit happier with this set, I still don't have what I really want. Let's face it. Zion is HARD. Oh, don't get me wrong, everywhere you turn is beautiful. But shooting up a 2,000 foot canyon is a challenge. Add winter to that and it is even worse. Winter is HARD, mostly because people like to look at warm, orange and yellow things rather than cold blue and white things.

But I had fun. I guess that's the main thing.

So the question is: Which one do you like? Wide (above), or close-up (below)? I took these shots in the very very early light of the day. I think these photos do an accurate job representing the colors that I saw. They certainly give an accurate feeling of how cold I was. My guess is that Johnny B will run inside and turn on three heaters just looking at these pictures (wuss).

(Click picture for a larger image)

I had to climb a bit for this next one, up the slick rock. I don't know why they call it slick rock. It feels like sand paper to me and grips the shoes real well. You climb the slick rock like skiing up hill. Find a formation in the rock and zig-zag your way up. Not to difficult and definitely not dangerous. Except for a big out-of-shape guy like me.

(Click picture for a larger image)

On my previous trip, I scheduled exactly where I wanted to be, what I wanted to shoot. On the suggestion of a friend, this time I just drove and found what I found. I decided to go through the tunnel and see what things looked like on top.

Here is another wide/closeup question. As the sun was coming up I found this beautiful peak right at a pullout. If you want to find it someday, its the one with the little ranch fence on the south side of the road. The clouds were dark, but the sky was peaking through and I knew it would be a nice day in the end. Turned out I was right as clear skies followed within a few hours.

(Click picture for a larger image)

(Click picture for a larger image)

On my way back through the tunnel, I was amazed at the view of the Towers of The Virgin. I was still up high, and every time I found a pullout, the shot was obscured by something or other. So I hurried down (probably breaking a few laws) to the Museum where there is a great place to shoot the Towers. The clouds obscured the towers a bit more than what I had seen from the south exit of the tunnel, but it was beautiful none the less. I have to say the view from up top was the most spectacular view I have seen of the towers. Unfortunately, that photo is for my mind only. Some day I need to figure out a good spot to see the towers from up top. Either that, or find a way to download my mind's photos at 12 mega pixels.

(Click picture for a larger image)

I am addicted to Zion NP. I'll shoot it again. And again and again. Until I get it right.

Leave a comment and tell me what you think. It helps to hear from people, especially when you find that others liked what you thought was average, and what you thought was great, not so much.

Zion in Winter

One of the problems with shooting in Zion in winter is, well, it's winter! It's cold. It's stormy. It's muddy and wet. But worst of all, if you try to time it for just after the storm, you are likely to end up in the storm. With a plan to shoot in Zion for three days, two out of the three ended up getting snowed/rained out. Thankfully, on the last day, I got about 5 hours of clearing weather. Here is some of what I shot.

Just as I pulled the trigger, I noticed the snowfall on the left. I saw a few others while I was there, but impossible to catch.

(click pictures for larger images)

This really caught my eye. It's what it says about struggle. You think you have it tough, try living on a three foot wide cliff! This is what you call living on the edge.

I have always been a fan of the Court of the Patriarchs, and not just because it's one of the first stops up the canyon. I shot from this location all three days, twice on the second day. The last one worked out nice.

Below is the Temple of Sinawava. It is a very beautiful place with an almost spiritual feel. This is one of the places that I could sit all day and just stew. This lighting is very weird, however. From what I can tell, it may get no direct light at all during the winter. The light just tends to skirt the outside walls. On the day I was there, it was not just the angle of the sun, but also the retreating storm. The sun would peek in and out of the clouds. Just when you'd think you would have great lighting, it would hide back behind a cloud again.

This is The Watchman. It is iconic. Everyone has one (or two: see below). I have seen some beautiful shots of the watchman. In fact, there is one on a St. George phone books that is just stunning. But in photographing Zion, it is one of those things you have to conquer. I'm sure I'll shoot it again.

OK, this wasn't really in Zions, although it could have been. I saw plenty of these cacti all around the Virgin River. I found this shot on the way to Zion, just south of Cedar City. My blog, I liked it, I do what I want.

I know, two shots of The Watchman on the same blog? Sorry. I just kind of liked this shot. It just has that feeling of expanse that I seem to like. I know what you are thinking. Doesn't he own a telephoto? I do, but I just don't know how to use it. Actually, I think my view is like my profile: WIDE.

I'm going to go back tomorrow and see what else I can learn. I guess 5 hours of shooting over three days wasn't enough.

To use a baseball analogy, I feel like I am hitting a lot of singles and doubles, as well as striking out. Not too many home runs. Continuing the analogy, I believe it is the "at bats" that count. Not only do you improve your odds at getting that great shot, but you improve your skill in the doing.

Maybe I'll try my telephoto.

Bryce Canyon

(remember, click picture to see full size pictures)

Bryce Canyon is without question one of the most unique, beautiful places I have ever visited. It holds a special place in my family. My mother worked there in the summers when she was young. She tells of the "Sing-Aways" that the staff would do each week as the Guests would leave. You can see pictures of the Sing-Aways in the lodge just outside the restaurant. I couldn't find my mom.

For a photographer, shooting Bryce is kind of like fishing at a fish hatchery. With a net. A big net. Really, you just need to point and shoot. I shot there both at sunset and sunrise. Because of the topography, Sunset is really to late. The amphitheater faces east, so the west plateau obscures the sun quite early. But I was still quite happy with this shot.

Sunrise, on the other hand is quite spectacular. And cold. We were there in late November, glad we were wearing our ski gear. I think it was the Norwegians that say there is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. So properly dressed, Kimi and I braved the cold to see a beautiful sunrise.

The hoodoos come in various colors. Everything from red to pink to white. At sunrise, the light plays of the white and yellow hoodoos in such a way that they glow. I know you think it's Photoshop, but I tell you it's real. I was shooting the amphitheater when Kimi pointed out this beauty. Sometimes four eyes are not a bad thing. Thanks Kimi.

I love Bryce. I know I said it before, but it's true. Bryce is unique. If you have not visited, you must. One day will work, but two is better. Plenty of hikes could keep you interested for a week. Every year.

I will be back. I want to shoot Bryce with snow. Probably in early January. Look for a follow up post with the white stuff.

Maui

Kimi and I took a quick trip to Maui. We were planning on just walking the beach and checking out the pier. As we were there on Sunday, we got to see Arlington West Santa Monica . The group Veterans for Peace places this monument every Sunday from Sunrise to sunset. The crosses represent the U.S. military personnel who have lost their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Interesting place to start a vacation.

It is almost unfair how beautiful it is in Hawaii. First time. It's not as bad as people say. We decided to hike the seven pools, starting at the bottom. There is a legend that says that if you swim in all seven pools, you will go to heaven. Apparently the legend was made up by the proprietor of some hotel or bed and breakfast in the 50's. Got the tourists to show up. This is the first pool.

While the first two or three pools are easily accessible, the final 4 require a bit of a hike. Very cool. You walk for about 1/2 a mile in bamboo that towers 30 to 40 feet over your head. What can I say? It is a Mecca for so many sports and hobbies, it's a wonder you can find solitude at all. Interestingly enough, the bikers (motor) get along with the bikers (cycle), and the off roaders (dirt motorheads) seem to tolerate the hikers (green). The photographers? We are up too early for anyone to notice.

The shot above is just across the road from our campground. It was an amazing find considering that it was selected in the dark.

This shot is early in the morning at Dead Horse Point. This is a state park and I have to say very well maintained. Utah state parks are great, and so is the state park service.

The shot below was taken of necessity. I'm not quite sure which is my favorite. It was certainly correct to shoot early in the morning. For those of you who don't know, that's the name for the times just before and after sunrise and sunset. That's the time when the sun's rays give great shadows and cool hues.

So this week, I decided to turn it into an over-nighter. Then I could get two golden hours from one trip. My friend Johnny and I made the trip south to the San Rafael Swell. Probably the most unknown treasure in Utah. Do me a favor, don't go. I want it to stay unknown. If you want to know how to get there, I'm not telling. But don't worry, I'll send pictures. Like this one

The river below is ONE THOUSAND FEET below the edge of the cliff! I'm standing two feet from the edge! Kind of scary. I thought about tying a rope to my foot and the other end to the car. But I'm sure if I had, Johnny would've taken the car drive and I'd have had a whole different problem.

These pictures are all taken right around "The Wedge". I remember asking a friend once if he had ever been to the Swell. He said he had and that the petroglyphs were "way cool". I said "petroglyphs?" He said "you mean you've been to the Swell and you haven't seen the petroglyphs?" I said "no, we just go to the Wedge." He said "what's the Wedge?"

This is the Wedge:

I hate to tell you, but I think I took about 400 pictures. That's 200 shots per golden hour. It's so easy over do it with digital. It is so close, I am trying to see it in all its forms. I figure being there often is a good way to do that. Didn't really get anything all that great. But it occurred to me that if this blog is meant to be a journey (and it is), then I will have to include some stuff that didn't work. So here it is.

I have to admit, I am fascinated by just a skiff of snow on the mountains. I love how crisp the evergreens get with just a touch of snow. There was a bit of that this day, but I didn't really catch it well. This one almost did it. I liked the contrast between the different bands of trees.

I liked this last shot when I took it, but it would have been better had I got a bit closer to the bush in the foreground. Shot with an 11-16mm wide, your can really get close to the foreground for a dramatic effect.

So that's it. Although they have been fun, it has meant arising at 5:00 am and getting out at the coldest part of the day. Yesterday, for a change, I thought it would be fun to try the afternoon. I decided to just go somewhere close, and there is no place closer than Bell Canyon. The trailhead is about 3 minutes from our front door.

Kimi and I headed up about 4:30 pm. The first part of this hike is a killer. Well, at least for me. It rises quickly, but you are soon rewarded with a great view of the Salt Lake Valley, smog and all. After about 30 minutes, we arrived at the Lower Bell Canyon Reservoir. The view was spectacular. The light was great so we hurried down to the water's edge.

Today was my first day shooting with my new Nikon D300. It seems more robust than the D80, which has been passed down to a budding photographer. Mariko is going to make great use of it. She is a photography major at the U. This is the second time we've made this trip in the past few weeks. Last time we shot at Wolf Creek, with some success. We also found ourselves in the fog as we headed back towards Heber and Midway.

This morning was similarly foggy as we drove into Heber. I assume it must therefore be a common experience in the early Heber morning. It reminds me of a conversation I once had with Roma Downy. I was telling her of my trip to Adare, Ireland one October. I told her that since it was October, it was rainy. She said (use your best Irish accent) 'Deary, it's not October, it's Ireland!' So I would guess Heber is often foggy in winter, but who knows?

Anyway, we found our way to a spot just below Deer Creek Resevoir, shooting towards what I believe is Cascade Mountain.

It was an interesting shoot. I spent the entire time focused on one shot. Didn't move the tripod an inch. The fog was not a problem, more of just a mist floating up from the river. Steve reminded me that we both said last time out that we shouldn't forget the toe warmers. We both forgot.

This is such a beautiful spot. I'm sure we will be back in the spring and fall. It will be interesting to see how it changes with the seasons. It would also be fun to cast a rod while we wait. The goal was to see Donny, not take pictures. More specifically, it was Kimi's goal to see Donny, and my goal to make sure she did. And take a few pictures. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate much. I think I need some schooling on shooting in bad weather. But I did get a couple of interesting shots. I also got the lay of the land at Snow Canyon and Zions.

This one was shot just as the sun was coming up in Washington, just above the race track.

Here's one from Snow Canyon.

Scout and Turn Around

Steve Schaefer and I made a trip to Wasatch County to take a few pictures. We got up well before sunrise and headed towards Kamas and Woodland. As we were driving in the darkness, it occurred to us that we should have scouted out some locations in the daylight. Kind of hard in pitch darkness, without even a moon to help us.

We drove to the top of Wolf Creek Pass. Well, at least as far as they plow in the winter. We got out for a look, and the stars were amazing! It's been a while since I have been out in dark sky territory. Made me want for my telescope. But this was a photography outing. So we drove around a bit and found something we thought might work. I wanted to go back right after the next storm, but schedules wouldn't allow. I made it back the day after the next storm. I snowshoe'd in with all my camera gear. I went in the afternoon hoping for the 'golden hour' light. I have begun taking my camera along, more as a scouting opportunity that anything else. This morning was bright and clear after a night of fresh snow. We headed up the Little Cottonwood Trail. It was spectacular. With the fresh snow, many of the branches were bent over the trail causing us to have to 'tunnel' under or knock the snow from the branches before we could proceed.

Here is a quick shot from a location I'll call the "First Opening After the Shed".

I love the way the fresh snow looks on this mountain. That may not be why I was such a geek, but it was certainly why I looked like one. Last fall, I had the camera in the car specifically to take pictures of the remodel at Fredrico's Pizza. The remodel looked great, and the photographs were very pedestrian. But, on the way back to Salt Lake, we passed through Sardine Canyon.

This is one of my favorite canyons. Not as dramatic as Logan Canyon or the Cottonwoods, but it just has this feel to it. If it didn't snow so much I'd want to live their.

As we passed through the canyon we noticed the cloud cover and had to stop. We shot for a few minutes and got some really nice shots. Well, at least I think so. Sometimes you get some really great shots through no fault of your own. Happy accidents.

I have to say that photographically this shot doesn't really say that much. After a 25 year hiatus, I again have a SLR dangling around my neck. I spent most of my teens with one camera or another always within striking distance. I was known as the photo-geek, and proud of it! It seemed my hands always smelled of fixer or developer. I think I miss that smell. It's hard to believe that something that I was so passionate about has stayed hidden for such a long time. But I am going to give it a go again.

I have spent the past month or so reviving my passion. Photography is very different today. No darkroom. No stinky chemicals. Dogging and burning seems so quaint. Today's tools are no different that the old tools we used to use. Just more effective, fast, detailed, easy, and did I say fast? It is exciting.

This blog will document my trip back. It will serve as a sort of diary of my weekly exploration into photography. Since my early days in photography, I have always been drawn to landscape photography (when I wasn't shooting skiers, baseball players, brides, and portraits to make a buck). It is really the landscape that draws me back. So, if you are watching, that is most likely what you will see. In the next few posts, I'll try to bring you up to speed with the past few weeks. I'll include a few photo's and document some shoots. My goal is to start with one photo shoot per week. I'll probably do a lot of Little Cottonwood Canyon, as that is my back yard. But I'll be sure to include other subjects as well. Utah is a landscape photographer's paradise.

(Note: That really is my first camera. No, I am not that old. My dad bought me that camera, along with a contact print darkroom for my 11th birthday. Dad got this camera from a camera repairman, who told him it would be the best option for an 11 year-old doing contact prints. As it took 120 film, it would produce a 2.25 x 2.25 print. I still think it is a way cool camera.)
